Field Technician

As a field technician, you provide inspections, testing, breakdown battery and emergency power maintenance, repairs and component replacements to large, medium and small telephone exchanges within a pre-determined service area.

What are the physical requirements of my role that I need to be aware of?

Work can involve loading and unloading the work vehicle, which may consist of tools, a variety of electrical equipment, rectifiers and batteries and assorted small electrical components. The heaviest components are the batteries which can weigh from 40-70kgs. Carrying of this equipment and components can occur over all types of terrain including up and down steps , stairs and ladders, however is usually not regarded as a large component of the work load as most jobs occur within the exchange itself under more controlled situations. Battery trolleys are available in some cases to ease this work load.
Most of the work carried out by the field technicians is of a repetitive and routine nature with similar main tasks required with each job or callout. Climbing steps or vertical ladders, walking on narrow walkways within the exchanges is required at times, and a reasonable level of agility, strength and endurance is required to maintain good work levels during the normal shifts and callout work.

Any of the above work requirements can become an issue if you aren’t mindful of the risks involved.
