5 Goals You Should Set

Without concrete goals to give us purpose and direction, we can all too easily feel like we’re drifting aimlessly, with same issues circling repeat mode, leaving us a bit flat and worn out.

It’s not that we don’t work hard or try, but the reality is, that without an actionable plan, a lot of the effort we put in just dissipates.

Goals provide clarity, accountability, and direction. They are always there to keep us on the right track, even when we don’t feel like it.

If you’re not sure what goals to set –here’s 5 you should consider :

1.Get in shape

Getting in shape is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. It improves your cognitive function, energy levels, and general health. But “get in shape” is a bit vague, so let’s be more concrete:

If you’re just starting out, focus on one or two things.

For example, start by incorporating 20 minutes of daily exercise into your life and try to cut back on foods that come in a box or package. Set a concrete goal to lose 300g per week (if you need to) and don’t stop.

It might seem like a small or insignificant goal, but it’s not. First, you establish a habit of regularly exercising. Second, you establish a habit of eating better. Third, you lose a third of a kilo each week. This can be 14 kg’s if you stretch it over a year.

2.Build something bigger than yourself

Each of us should strive to leave the world a little better than we found it. And the more you selflessly give, the more fulfilled you’ll be in your life. Because of that, one of your big goals in life should be to build something big that can help many people.

It may be supporting a charity, and not just giving money, but getting actively involved. It might be helping look after a friends children if they need a break, maybe helping at a local school homework or breakfast club – maybe starting one if there isn’t one already there.

There are endless possibilities of what you could do, but without setting it as a goal, you may never find the fulfillment building something bigger than yourself can bring into your life, seeing what a difference it can make for others.

Put at least 30 minutes to an hour a day to build or contribute to something bigger and you’ll have a much more fulfilling life.

3.Leave your comfort zone as often as you can

This is a really cool goal to have because it teaches you a lot about yourself. We often put arbitrary limits on ourselves and avoid discomfort at all cost. But, if you flip the switch and start actively putting yourself in uncomfortable situations, your perspective will expand immensely.

Try changing a few things up from time to time…

•  Any situation that arises that you might normally say no to, try saying yes.
•  If you struggle to break the chains at work and feel tied to your desk, then go for a walk every day for a week. You might feel                   separation anxiety, but you will also feel a whole lot better and probably be more productive.
•  If you see someone who looks like they need cheering up, say hi, or buy them a drink. If it’s someone at work, have them over for           dinner.
•  If you’re given a tough task with little time for completion, don’t bicker and whine. Break it down and get it done.
•  If you need to do something new or unfamiliar, don’t think of all the things that could go wrong. Dive in and learn as you go.

4.Enjoy the little things in life

Life is often hectic for us. We are always in movement. Always later for somewhere. Always have a deadline looming over us. We never truly appreciate the little things in life. We hardly even notice them.

But start doing just that.

The next time a stranger is nice to you, return the favor and enjoy the moment.

If you’re a parent – don’t just be near your kids, be really with them, give them your 100% attention and soak up every undivided attention moment you can have with them, as things change so fast.

The next time you see a beautiful sunset, take a moment to appreciate it.

Enjoying the little things in life doesn’t take much time and it certainly doesn’t take effort. But it can greatly improve your mood and outlook on life.

5.Become financially independent

Financial independence gives you freedom and a peace of mind. You should actively seek it. Start by clearing any debt that you have, especially on credit cards.

We can get into habits of spending money we don’t really have on things we don’t really need, which can lead to stressful outcomes when things get tight. Keep building a reserve that in your “in case of emergency” fund to ease the worry.
