Fitball facts

I have been constantly over the past 10 years asked about using Fitballs as chairs at work, my answer is generally no! This is due to a number of reasons

1.    You can slump as easily on a fit ball as a chair

2.    The balls have a tendency to roll out from under the person as they sit or stand

3.    Fit balls are not height adjustable potentially and this can result in poor upper body postures

4.    For dynamic work tasks an additional consideration is the instability of the balls as inappropriate postures can result (and there is a risk of losing balance and falling off).

5.    The balls are designed to be a tool to help people create better posture and switch on in the right amplitude and order the stabilising muscles of the torso, unfortunately due to the nature of the fitballs this generally creates greater loads as time goes on and means that the stabilisers in all but the very well trained will fatigue rapidly and lead to poor positions again

so they might be good for sitting on, as long as you sit on them well , but only for 10 minutes or so! Basically use them as a training tool and not as primary furniture
